32 Key Pieces You Need In A Year Round Capsule Wardrobe
The beauty of a capsule wardrobe is that all the clothing can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. All the pieces in the collection complement each other, which makes outfit coordination a breeze!
A year round capsule wardrobe is special because it has all the key pieces you would need year round. It has you covered for fall, winter, spring, and summer!
Best of all, this year round capsule wardrobe only needs 32 pieces. It goes to show that you don’t need a lot to stay chic and practical all year.
Keep in mind that this year round capsule wardrobe checklist isn’t meant to be followed strictly. I encourage you to customize it to your lifestyle and needs.
Use this as inspiration and don’t be afraid to add more or use less pieces!
Tops
- White T-Shirt
The white t-shirt is a part of all my capsule wardrobes and for a good reason too. This is an essential foundation piece for any casual outfit.
It’s seasonless and will pair effortlessly with any bottoms. This is a crucial wardrobe basic, so invest in a quality t-shirt that will last for years to come.
- Satin Cami
Camis are great layering pieces in the colder months and look great on their own in warmer seasons. Satin elevates the cami by giving it a polished and luxurious feel.
They look good under a leather or denim jacket during cooler temperatures. Moreover, they pair easily with most bottoms too.
- Crop Top
A cute crop top is essential for warmer months! They look amazing paired with high-waisted bottoms.
Plus, you can bring them into the cooler season by layering them under jackets too.
- White Button Up Shirt
Clean, crisp, and classic–there’s a reason why this needs to be in a year round capsule wardrobe checklist. A white button down is versatile, timeless, and seasonless.
I don’t think it will ever go out of style. It works great in casual outfits and makes you look professional in an instant too.
They can be worn on their own or layered under sweaters and jackets. It’s great for polished looks or business casual outfits.
Bottoms
- Tailored Pants
Pants or trousers are super versatile and can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. They’re a year-round staple for me.
Remember to purchase black or tan trousers for easy outfit coordination. I also love high-waisted and wide leg styles for their leg elongating effect.
- Midi Slip Skirt
A slip skirt is a lovely addition to an all season capsule wardrobe. I am particularly fond of satin or silk skirts. A slip skirt will instantly elevate the entire outfit and make it look classy.
I recommend a midi length slip skirt with a side slit for a classy yet sexy look. Wear this to casual or dressy events depending on how you style it.
- Blue Or Black Jeans
Denim jeans are also a year-round staple and go-to for casual looks. I like to keep timeless silhouettes in my wardrobe, so that it always stays fresh.
Loose jeans and straight blue jeans have modern silhouettes that don’t seem to go out of style. I also recommend high-waisted jeans for their leg-lengthening effect.
Add one pair of classic straight leg blue jeans and/or a pair of skinny black jeans for more variety. You can never go wrong with jeans!
- Denim Shorts
Extra hot days call for denim shorts! These classic denim cutoffs are timeless warm weather pieces that complete casual outfits.
You can even wear tights or leggings underneath to bring them into the cooler seasons too. It’s always good to have at least one pair of classic blue denim shorts.
- Tailored Shorts
If there was one other pair of shorts that I would wear besides denim shorts, it would have to be tailored shorts. These shorts add structure and clean lines to any outfit.
They pair well with a plain white t-shirt or white button up shirt. You can dress them up or down effortlessly. Tailored shorts are a great way to look polished and stay cool during the warmer seasons.
- Black Leggings
Black leggings are an essential foundation piece for effortless comfort and style. They’re super easy to pair with shoes and tops too.
Look for interesting textures or simple details, such as faux leather textures or a small side slit for a unique twist to the typical black leggings.
These athleisure pants are a necessary year round wardrobe staple! They’re stylish, but just as comfortable as sweatpants.
Unlike sweatpants, jogger pants have a flattering leg shape. Plus, their cuffed ankles help highlight your cute shoes too.
Moreover, they can be dressed up or down easily, which makes going from the gym to brunch a lot easier too.
Knits
- Lightweight Sweater
There is nothing like throwing on a cozy sweater when it’s cold out. You should have at least one lightweight sweater in a neutral color (think beige, white, black, or gray).
If you want to add more variety, purchase a few varying styles (think crewnecks, v-necks, turtlenecks or cropped hems) in different neutral colors.
- Cardigan
Cardigans are perfect layering pieces and are great for chilly indoor and outdoor weather. Make sure you get neutral colors, such white, gray, beige, or black for super easy outfit coordination.
- Turtleneck
A basic turtleneck will not only keep you cozy in frigid temperatures, but they look incredibly chic too.
When looking for turtlenecks, opt for fitted turtlenecks. The bodycon fit will trap in warmth and help highlight your curves. A thin, black body-hugging turtleneck is the ultimate slimming piece.
Plus, turtlenecks help elongate the neck and make you appear taller. Points for keeping your neck warm and making you look stylish!
Dresses
- Everyday T-Shirt Dress
A shirt dress is the ultimate casual dress. They go great with sneakers, boots, and sandals. They’re seasonless and layer well under jackets and coats too.
Look for t-shirt dresses that are slimming and have simple, but unique details, such as side slits.
- Satin/Silk Midi Slip Dress
For more dressier events, I recommend having a satin or silk midi slip dress on hand. These slinky dresses are incredibly elegant and will work for a variety of special events.
Pair them with heels and minimal gold jewelry for a classy and sophisticated look.
Shoes
- White Sneakers
If you love taking long strolls, sneakers are the way to go! Sneakers are a year-round shoe staple for me, especially white sneakers.
White sneakers pair well with practically any bottoms because it’s a clean blank slate. Pair them with jeans, trousers, or skirts for easy casual looks.
Ankle boots are my go-to shoes for fall and winter. I recommend ankle boots with a chunky heel, so that it’s comfortable to walk in and gives you a bit of height.
They make an outfit look so sleek and pair so well with just about any bottom.
- Flats
Flats are a must in a year round capsule wardrobe. I love the fact that they are super comfortable to walk in. Plus, they’re hassle free–slip them on and off in just a few seconds.
If you’re looking for a stylish pair of flats, consider the mule flats. These flats provide coverage up front and come in stylish toe shapes, such as pointed or square toes. They’re even great for business casual outfits.
- Nude Heels
A pair of nude heels is perfect for dressy and special events. You never know when they’ll come up or when you just want to feel a bit more fancy.
Plus, the nude color matches with pretty much anything!
- Block Heeled Sandals
I highly recommend sandals with a chunky heel for everyday looks. The chunky heel gives you a boost in height and makes it more comfortable to walk in.
Play around with pointed or square toe shapes for a stylish detail.
Outerwear
- Blazer
Get a blazer if you don’t own one yet! They instantly make an outfit look smart and can be dressed down for casual looks. It also makes a great layering piece for the changing seasons, such as winter to spring.
For instance, you can style a blazer with a t-shirt and jeans. In addition, slouchy blazers look great with a dress. Blazers are seasonless and timeless, so you’ll find yourself wearing them year-round.
- Denim Jacket
The denim jacket is a classic staple that every girl should have. I recommend boxy and loose fitting denim jackets for that cool, laid back vibe.
These jackets look great over a simple white tee or dress. They even look amazing with high-waisted trousers or jeans. It’s the perfect layer for chilly days too!
- Leather Jacket
I love the tough and edgy vibe that leather jackets add to an outfit. They’re sleek and instantly elevate a plain outfit.
Moreover, they provide a lot of warmth on cold days and are easy to layer over other pieces.
- Wool coat
A tailored wool coat is a timeless and sophisticated outerwear. They can even be layered over dresses too.
In winter, you can add a scarf and layer a sweater underneath to make it warmer.
Jewelry & Accessories
- Wool Scarf
A neutral-toned wool scarf is the one scarf you will need to layer with your coats and jackets.
These soft, warm, and breathable scarves last longer than cotton scarves and don’t need to be washed as frequently.
- Beanie
A beanie will keep your head warm and hair in place. Get a beanie made of wool to maximize warmth and prevent heat from escaping.
- Black Belt
A classic black belt is perfect for cinching in or emphasizing the waist line. They also help create visual separation between your top and bottom.
Plus, they’re handy if your pants are just a tad too loose. 😉
- Sunglasses
A pair of classic sunnies is a necessary accessory year-round! Not only do they protect your eyes from UV-rays, but a good pair can instantly elevate an outfit.
- Tote Bag
A tote bag is the perfect casual bag for quick grocery runs or Sunday afternoon strolls. They’re roomy and spacious, so it’s perfect for carrying lots of things.
- Crossbody
A cross body is great for hand-free shopping and long walks. Plus, they come in so many cute styles!
For a year round capsule wardrobe checklist, choose a minimal crossbody with a classic shape. These are timeless accessories.
- Minimal Gold Jewelry
Minimal gold-toned jewelry looks great on pretty much anyone and they’re incredibly classy. They add just enough shine without taking the attention away from your overall look.
Tips For Creating A Year-Round Capsule Wardrobe
Every year round capsule wardrobe should be unique and personalized to one’s lifestyle and personal style.
Here’s a few tips to keep in mind as you’re creating a year round capsule checklist.
- Think about what you do on a daily basis. This includes work, hobbies, and casual hangouts. Next, think about the less frequent events you attend, such as formal events and vacations. Focus on building your wardrobe with the pieces you need the most and then focus on the pieces you need for special events.
- Figure out your personal style. Is it casual, minimal, feminine, boho or something else? Having a theme will help you narrow down your choices.
- Keep a consistent color palette. Don’t go for crazy, bright colors if you’re a beginner at this! This will only make outfit coordination harder. I recommend starting out with neutral colors, such as brown, black, beige, gray, and white.
